In a move that should come as a surprise to absolutely nobody, Shane Victorino has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a leg injury. As a result, Matt Barnes has been called up from Pawtucket to join the bullpen for the time being.
The injury is to his right hamstring and is the same injury that caused him to be placed one the DL twice last season. The injury is not severe, Victorino could be seen doing short sprints before yesterdays game, but is enough to require a DL stint nonetheless.
Given that Victorino was batting .143 on the season the loss of him in the lineup is not a huge one at this point. Additionally, the bullpen has already had a pretty heavy workload so far, so the extra arm will definitely help lighten the load a bit.
So far it appears that Allen Craig will play right field in Victorino’s absence, he started there last night and today as well, but don’t be surprised to see Daniel Nava or Brock Holt out there either. Only time will tell if Victorino is headed down the same injury plagued path he went down last year, so for now one can only hope that this stint on the DL is the only time he must serve there.
