The Yankees are paying almost $50 million for their outfield of Beltran, Ellsbury and Gardner. So far those three outfielders have put together 13 home runs and 36 RBIs.
For about $48 million dollars less the Sox outfield of Brock Holt, Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr have put together 15 home runs and 76 RBI much more than the Yankees. Along with putting up staggering numbers the Sox outfield is young: Betts is 23, JBJ is 26 and Holt is 27.
This outfield has been compared to the great Sox outfield of 1975 which included the likes of Fred Lynn, Jim Rice and Dwight Evans, which was also a young trio with Rice at age 22 with Lynn and Evans at age 23. The legendary outfield of 1975 was a big reason why the Sox made it the World Series that year as they powered their offense through the season–much like our young outfield has done in 2016. Hopefully we can get a similar result–though with a win this time.
One of the reasons the outfield is so good is John Farrell’s willingness to play Holt over Castillo even though Rusney has a bigger contract and by all accounts “deserves” the spot more.
Another reason the Sox outfield is so good is there great defense. JBJ and Mookie have great and range speed in the outfield to rob hits (especially given how big right and center are) while Holt does a great job of playing balls off the Monstah which is not an easy thing to do.
Now the Sox might not have a player who hits .331 like Fred Lynn did that year, however they are likely going to have more stolen bases than the 23 the Sox outfield had 41 years ago. The Sox have been a very fun team to watch this season and the outfield has done their part to be the reason why, let’s hope they continue to blow teams away going forward!
