On Saturday the 25th Firefighters were joined with Red Sox alumni in Mansfield to play in a filled stadium. The game was a fundraiser for the local firefighters local 772. Among the Red Sox alumni were Bill Lee who spent 10 years with the Sox, Sam Horn and “Oil can” Boyd who spent eight years with the team.

The Red Sox are one of just a few major sports teams to do a fundraiser with alumni however it’s more common in college. This is not the Sox have played Bangor. This tradition has now been going on since.

Some former Sox players who have played in other years include Jim Corsi, Matt Stairs and Glenn Hoffman.

In 2010 Dan Landers – Bangor Fire Department described his experiences.

”It was a tough go, I gotta tell ya, we were to the point where we were going to lose and then it turned out we did lose” Landers said. “I’ve been on the department for 13 years and we’ve lost by a hare’s breath every year. It was a great time. I think everybody had a fun time. I know I had a great time.”

Fans can buy tickets or sometimes go for free but there is a $10 suggested donation for the event. Money raised goes to local charities and to families in need. There’s no doubt the fundraiser is a success, in 2010 the event raised an estimated $35,000.
