Henry Owens is headed for the minors, could he make an appearance mid season though?

They say it is that time of year, Spring Training, where “Hopes springs eternal”.

Well, its also the time of year that ballplayers get their dreams crushed! They get sent back down to the minors leagues after playing alongside all the guys that will be in the major leagues for a few weeks.

Prior to Thursday game it announced that pitchers Heath Hembree, Brian Johnson and Henry Owens were optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, and  Outfielder Ryan LaMarre, pitcher Roman Mendez, and first baseman Sam Travis were reassigned to minor league camp, which gives them the option to send them to either Pawtucket or AA Portland. .

Owens and Johnson, dream of being in the Red Sox’s 5 man rotation for opening day…crushed.

Hembree and Mendez  hopes of being in bullpen at Fenway…shattered.

LaMarre, who finally made it the majors last August with Cincinnati …booted back down.

And the guy who had become a spring sensation Sam Travis (he more than impressed with 15 hits in 28 at bats),….. gets kicked back to the minors to wait his turn.

Its a sad day for all these guys.  They tried their best and were all told they weren’t good enough. Back to the minors they go to work on their skills and hone their game so when they get their next chance they hopefully can stick.

For those still counting major leaguers, there are 39 players left in big league camp. That makes these 14 total player that wont make the initial 25 man roster for opening day.  We can say E-Rod and Carson Smith will start on the DL and Christian Vazquez will be sent down to build up more strength. That makes 11 left

Of the eight remaining non-roster invitees the only one who is realistically fighting for a roster spot is David Murphy, sorry Allen Craig, Josh Rutledge and Carlos Marmol. That leaves 4 cuts left.

Deven Marrero wont beat out Super Brock  so expect to see his dreams crushed in a day or two. That leaves the 3 pitchers left.

If forced to guess, those three will be Roenis EliasNoe Ramirez and Brandon Workman. Its back to the minors!

Think it could be a different three for the last pitcher cuts? Leave a comment with your picks.
